Overview

December 3rd, 2008

Global Mission to Rescue Persecuted Falun Gong Practitioners (GMR) was formed in November 2002 by a group of volunteers who are concerned with the ongoing persecution of Falun Gong in China. GMR is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization with branches in 18 countries in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia.  The headquarters are located in Boston, USA.

The mission of GMR is to raise worldwide awareness of the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners; to rescue those being tortured in jails, forced-labor camps, mental institutions, and detention centers; and to initiate, coordinate, and support efforts of the international community that help to end the genocide against Falun Gong practitioners in China.

Even before GMR was formally registered in 2002, the campaigns to rescue persecuted Chinese Falun Gong practitioners and their family members had been ongoing since the year 2000. During the past four years, GMR has been devoted to publicizing the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in western societies and rescuing people, as well as their family members in various forms (press conferences, parades, bike/van tours, postcard campaigns and rallies, etc.) worldwide with the support of legislatures, governmental organizations, the United Nations, and other non-governmental organizations. Because of these efforts, over 20 Falun Gong practitioners have been successfully rescued and reunited with their loved ones in the United States and other democratic countries outside of China.  In addition, more than 90 Falun Gong practitioners, who have relatives overseas, have been released from labor camps either earlier or without further extension of prison terms due to the international pressure from a mass of rescue campaigns coordinated by GMR. Many large-scale campaigns designed to rescue children, women, and intellectuals who are presently persecuted for their Falun Gong beliefs are also underway.

GMR has also been actively participating in scores of human rights related conferences, both domestically and internationally, and have established good relationships with over 100 Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) worldwide, such as Amnesty International, International Rescue Committee, and Human Rights Watch, to name a few.  In March 2004, GMR initiated a resolution, which was joined by nearly 100 NGOs worldwide to condemn China’s persecution towards Falun Gong and other people of conscience.  GMR also helped to successfully lobby the U.S. House of Representatives to pass HCR 530 on March 3, 2004, which urges China to stop the persecution of all religious practitioners and to safeguard fundamental human rights.  It also urged the United States to introduce a resolution calling upon the People’s Republic of China to end its human rights violations in China at the 60th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Commission in Geneva, Switzerland.

On the whole, GMR has grown into a well-functioned international human rights organization since 2002.  We strongly believe that by further collaborating with governmental agencies and other established human rights NGOs worldwide; GMR will play a more important role in leading the national and international campaigns to rescue Falun Gong practitioners in China.
